The Common Denominator

Posted 13 years, 3 months ago    0 comments

Three women bring their song-writing talents to the stage at the legendary Vinnies in Raglan, on Thursday December 9th, starting at 8 pm sharp.  Sculpting stories in song that span acoustic pop to poignant ballads, folk rock to beach cruise, this is a powerful trio whose life journeys have been very different, but they have come together through their music.

Anne Taylor, Lynne Wilkins, and Lucy Cioffi first started discussing the idea quite recently, and are pleased with how quickly The Common Denominator has come together.   Artist and musician – Anne Taylor is constantly involved in at least one project.  Her new band Glyde has been playing together for some time, at events such as the Hamilton Gardens Festival earlier this year, but this will be their first local appearance.

Lynne Wilkins’ versatility as a musician and backing vocalist means that she is often appearing with other artists, and needs to make time for her own music.  She says that her band Restless has a new line-up.  I’m looking at some of the songs in an entirely new light because of the interpretation that the other band members bring to them.”

Plymouth-born Lucy Cioffi ’s first performance in Raglan at the local musicians club, with her Irish boyfriend Dougal Greer accompanying her on guitar, later led her to form her band The Hand me Downs.  Recalling that night, Lucy talks about the confidence that experience created: “There was a record producer in the crowd who came up to me afterwards and asked me to do some recording at his studio … I couldn’t believe it”.

All three acknowledge that this project could be the start of something, so make sure you can say you were there at the beginning!

Thursday 9th December, 8:00 pm sharp at Vinnies, Raglan.  Door $5.00

Hamilton’s very first male burlesque performer Mr B. Frank will take to the stage and make his daring debut at Dr. Sketchy’s ‘Santa Baby’ Christmas session next month

Dr Sketchys a worldwide art event arrived in Hamilton a few months ago much to local artist and art lover's delight; its a great way to combine art dance, entertainment and networking.

For December 2010 Hamilton’s very first male burlesque performer Mr B. Frank will take to the stage and make his daring debut at Dr. Sketchy’s ‘Santa Baby’ Christmas session next month. ‐dominated world of burlesque and Simon Howie (Mr B. Frank’s other name) is excited to be Hamilton’s first ‘boylesque’ performer. Boylesque is a concept I've had in the back of my mind for years now, I just didn't know where to start," he says. "I met one of the performers, the lovely Miss Busty La Belle at the very first Dr Sketchy’s, and she convinced me that boylesque was indeed a growing phenomenon and I should get involved. The ideas just started flowing. After much encouragement from Grace and Michelle (Parish) and the Bombshell Burlesque girls, Mr B Frank was born!"

Simon loves everything about the vintage era and has used two of his favourite male performers as his inspiration for the act.

"

My routine is largely inspired by Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire," he says. "Expect some smooth dance moves, a few comic elements and a whole lot of raunch, wrapping up with a very flashy Christmas themed ending. Mr B Frank is about to be revealed!"

Dr Sketchy organiser Michelle Parish says Mr B Frank’s amazing performance is just part of what’s been a great year.

"He does a fantastic Frank Sinatra," she says. "But that’s all I can tell without giving it away…t’s been a great year for burlesque in Hamilton and there’s been a great response to the Bombshell Burlesque classes and Dr Sketchy’s so far."

Dr Sketchy sessions combine burlesque performance with life

‐drawing classes and often feature contests such as ‘best incorporation of a cat’ and ‘best left‐handed drawing’.

Trees at the Meteor 2010

Posted 13 years, 4 months ago    0 comments

Its year three for Trees at the Meteor, an awesome event I took part of back in 2009 and eagerly anticipate for 2010!  There are a couple less categories this year but it doesnt mean there will be less to see as more people get creating each year! Expect a bigger, brighter show and lots more competition.

Here's some information for those interested in entering or even just going along to see the trees others create-

........ we have a big Christmas Tree in Garden Place.  But it comes from China.  Santa comes from the North Pole.  Aint it time we got our hands covered with PVA and glitter, and paper mache, and got some friends and whanau over to make a little Christma s tree 'whoopee'.    NZ's styles.  Pacific styles...  Under the Southern Cross.  2010!

You creatives out there.   Make it.  You.  Yourselfs without the elfs.  All we are saying is give trees a chance -  And for what better cause?

And honestly.  In December it doesn't snow in Hamilton.  Never has.  Probably wont. We don't roast chestnuts, we roast politicians.  We wear singlets.  We sweat and sometimes wear deodarant and Speedo's.  And we used to get sunburnt to blazes at Whangamata before we got any wiser.

Plazas and malls deck the halls but we don't want a bar of it

We don't have a bar to spend anyways. Still paying off the last bar we spent when no one knew what  a recession was.   Ahhhh the good old days.... never again Santa Visa!

TREES AT THE METEOR celebrates Christmas different.  Why?  Because Kiwi-ness is in.  King Charity is in.  Rejoice as Pinus Radiata meets Pasifika.  Create Aotearoa avant gardens.  Subvert the tree, decorate a tree.  Make art. Make festivity.  And help make a festive forest.

We want you to give.  Decorate a tree for the city.  Compassion not consumption.  Make art from the heart. Keep it real and green......

Tipi Haere Te Reo - Album Launch

Posted 13 years, 8 months ago    2 comments

Update from a previous client - Ayesha Kee

Ayesha has informed us that they are donig well in the music industry and are releasing their album 'Tipi Haere Te Reo' on Monday 26th July through Ode Distribution.  This release ties in with Maori Language Week.

This is not a new concept but a concept that will cross many boundaries.  This album has brought some of the classic songs that we grew up with, and now these classic songs have been translated into Maori.

Peter Rangiwai, (Ngati Porou), Business Owner and Musician got annoyed listening to the same Maori songs on the radio day in and day out and the seed of this idea was planted many years ago but now is in a physical form.

To help him achieve this dream Hohepa MacDougall (Tuhoe) is a partner in this project and also the key translator from English into Maori.  He is a registered translator and contracts to parliament.

They have employed the wonderful vocal talents of some of Aotearoa’s top Maori talent.  This includes:

Ruia Aperahama,(Ngati Wharetoa, Nga Whaatua) he has leant his talents to Southside of Bombay and more famous for his album “Waiata of Bob Marley”.

Ria Hall, (Ngati Ranginui) an amazing soul/reggae singer who has worked with the likes of Ardijah, Herbs, the late Phil Fuemana, Hollie Smith just to name a few.

Kemara Fuimaono is of Samoan and Maori (Nga Puhi, Ngati Ranginui) descent.  Growing up in a musical household he has lent his vocal talents to Iva Lamkum , Carol Henry and Fat Freddy’s Drop.

To accompany these vocal talents we have some of the best musicians Wellington has to offer such as Rodger Fox, Caleb Robinson, Vaughn Roberts and Neil Billington just to mention a few and to bring this all together to create this album is record producer Dick Le Fort .

below is the full tracklisting of the album.
